Visual arts and photography lovers and enthusiasts – mark in your calendar June the 11th 2015, as it is the opening of the Derrick Santini solo exhibition In Your Mind, hosted by Pertwee Anderson & Gold Gallery in London.
In Your Mind completes Santini’s holy trinity of corporal and mythological lenticular exhibitions, following his headline-grabbing solo exhibition Metamorphosis at SCREAM gallery in 2012, and I Love You, at Maurice Einhardt Neu Gallery in 2010.
Derrick Santini: “There’s something really quite magical about it. It’s just in between. It’s not a still, it’s not a film – it’s this magic little world in between.”
The lenticular process involves layering a series of still images of live models and then printing them onto the back of a special ribbed plastic sheet, which acts as a lens revealing the full animation within. The figure in the piece suddenly springs to life and moves with the viewer – creating a very delicate animation with an illusion of depth and space.
Derrick Santini: “In our modern world the still and silent image feels slightly lacking… we want and desire more, content yearns to move and ideally interact. Film is the other medium I love, the power of suggestion and universality of film is awesome. I love the specific-ness of film and equally the abstractness of photography. The Lenticular medium encompasses both these dictums, and hence its growing fascination with me as a unique medium to create and communicate with.”
Derrick Santini studied photography at at Harrogate College and then at the London College of Communication. Already whilst studying Derrick became an accomplished reportage photographer.
This lead to a prolific career spanning 3 decades in the fields of fashion, music and advertising photography and development of Derrick’s distinctive intimate and insightful portraiture style based on interaction and personality. He has worked with brands including Apple, Asics, Reebok, Island Records and London Fashion Week, creating seminal portraits of many icons of contemporary culture such as Rihanna, Alexander McQueen, Jay Z, Neneh Cherry, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Yves Saint Laurent, Sir Peter Blake, Dame Judi Dench and Mary J Blige.
Derrick Santini: “Creating images is all about story telling, whether as a stand-alone iconic image, or a series of images, or a film, a natural evolution of the same line of enquiry and my own creative journey.”
A few years ago Derrick began experimenting with lenticular photographic works. These have taken off substantially in the last three years, with solo shows in London and Istanbul, as well as numerous group shows in New York, Miami and Brazil.
His pieces have proven extremely popular with gallerists and collectors alike, counting Adele and Jemima Khan as owners and fans of his work. Santini’s Mermaid images have already caught the eye of the internationally renowned English conceptual artist Damien Hirst who purchased the first 3 completed works.
Santini spent last year photographing his subject and muse Katie Keight in various swimming pools and the Majorcan Ocean. By shooting in water he has been able to continue the obsession with mythology and the human condition that was evident in his Leda and the Swan and Magpie series featured in Metamorphosis.
In Your Mind Exhibition
The exhibition In Your Mind, taking place at Pertwee Anderson & Gold Gallery from 11th to 22nd of June 2015, will feature 14 new large-scale lenticular prints. Derrick transports the model into various scenarios: She becomes a Mermaid swimming in the depths of the sea, a naked nymph jetting through the sky in a rainbow coloured bubble, a 90s rave chick in a Soul II Soul-esque video clip, and a 70s space cadet pirouetting through the galaxy in a Kubrickian space craft.
Santini has also created fetal imagery that reference birth and rebirth, trippy cubist animations celebrating the joy of life, and the Love image of a nude torso twisting and turning in an infinite loop against a black background, representing the circle of life, and Genesis – the beginning of life itself.
Visitors will be taken on a journey underwater, through an installation at the entrance of the gallery with a giant Lenticular wall piece of the figure swimming alongside the viewer as they enter the show, and take a trip inside the mind of the artist.
